AMERSHAM Amersham is an historic town of two halves “Old Amersham” and “Amersham on the Hill”. Old Amersham is the historic part with many buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Amersham on the Hill grew up as a result of the Metropolitan line, which ends at Amersham, giving this area a more 1930’s suburbia feel of “Metroland”. The combination of old and new offers a wide range of desirable locations and properties for families and commuters alike. GERRARDS CROSS In a similar way to Amersham on the Hill, Gerrards Cross grew up around the railway station which opened in 1906. THE CHALFONTS The new visitor to South Bucks may feel confused by the number of “Chalfonts” The word Chalfont is thought to be derived from the old English words “cealk” meaning “chalk”, and “funt” meaning “spring”. Other theories include “cald” meaning “cold” which became “Chaldfont” and later “Chalfont” meaning “cold springs”. There is a Little Chalfont, Chalfont St Giles, and Chalfont St. Peter which merges into Gerrards Cross. The area is often referred to as “Gerrards Cross & the Chalfonts. This area offers all the benefits of living in a semi rural area whilst being close to good transport links into London to the East and Oxford to the West. The area is steeped in history and even mentioned in the Domesday Book. TRANSPORT Amersham on the Hill is at the end of the Metropolitan line. A half hourly service which stops at other stations forming part of John Betjeman’s “Metroland” takes you into Baker Street in 30-40 minutes. Amersham is also served by Chiltern Railways to London Marylebone and Aylesbury. The London service is half hourly and takes about 30 minutes. The Chiltern Railway trains are faster and more comfortable than the Metropolitan trains. Amersham is 5 Miles from Junction 18 of the M25 and 6 miles north of junction 2 of the M40. Gerrards Cross provides a fast service into London Marylebone on the Chiltern Line in 25 minutes.
